How to create a Tone of Voice document

Establishing a brand’s Tone of Voice (ToV) is a key part of the brand guidelines.

Done well, a ToV document will outline how your brand speaks to its audience.

What should a Tone of Voice document include?

Tone of Voice documents should include best practice guidelines for every communication channel.

ToV guidance should also demonstrate how a brand’s mission, purpose, values and target audience influence its output.

How to format a Tone of Voice document

A PDF or a read-only Word document in a central location works best. Include a date, version number and contents page for easy navigation too.

Updates will need to take place every so often to cover new platforms and audience segments, so have an editable version on hand too.
