What is a Tone of Voice document?

A Tone of Voice (ToV) document forms part of your brand guidelines. It’s where you outline how your brand speaks to its audience in every instance.

A ToV is typically an internal document that members of the team can access and familiarise themselves with. You may also choose to share your Tone of Voice document with freelancers and new starters as part of the on-boarding process.

Why do brands need a Tone of Voice?

Having a Tone of Voice document is a guiding force, creating consistency within communications and enabling you to stand out from the crowd.

Uncertainty around what a brand represents can result in mixed messages, confusion and wasted time and money.

Internally, a Tone of Voice doc gives teams the confidence to innovate and work independently, knowing they are on the right track. It also makes briefing and feedback easier because you have something to link back to.

Externally, a solid Tone of Voice helps you stand out, builds consistency and, as a result, a brand’s trust and connection with its audience.
